Visitors to our world could be forgiven for thinking that we had all gone technology mad. Most of us are used to voice activated software on the computer, especially those who’ve developed repetitive strain injury, does that mean we are ready for voice activated doors?
Imagine a situation where you’ve just had one of those beautiful oak doors fitted to the entrance of your house and there’s no keyhole, you’re told that all you have to do is speak and the door will open – I thought that began and ended with Ali Baba, I hear you say. Anyone who’s watched the sitcom 3D Rock will be aware that voice activated technology is becoming more widespread. Xbox Kinect has a voice activated feature, but it takes a lot of inane shouting at the television screen to get it to understand you.
Apparently the latest technology works by registering your voice print. At the moment this is being launched in businesses as an extra security measure. Security passes can get lost or stolen but a voice print really does distinguish the real you from an imposter. According to the science, everyone’s voice pattern is unique and in the US the use of voice recognition technology is spreading fast through the banks, prisons and corporate world.
There is talk in some quarters that eventually voice recognition will be used to verify passport owners, in place of the current border security checks. Voice recognition technology works because the pattern of your voice prints out as a sore of radio wave. The print is then read by the gadget, which identifies the pattern as that of a particular voice. Some artists are already translating some of these voice prints onto canvas.
A Voice Activated World?
Voice recognition technology is moving fast and there is already speculation about where this will take us in the future. While the Xbox technology may need refining it does suggest that we are moving into a world where most of the gadgets that we use will be voice activated. Imagine returning home and walking up to one of those oak doors and just speaking to it instead of searching for the keys to open it.
In the future you may not have to worry about car keys as you’ll be able to open the doors and get the engine started just with your voice. You will speak and the television will come on, speak again and you can change the channels. Obviously problems will occur when you have a cold or some other condition that alters your voice pattern – you could find yourself in a world where nothing works and you can’t even open your own front door!
As the technology advances, no doubt, any problems will eventually get ironed out. Perhaps the devices will be programmed to deal with any pattern alterations and there is no reason to suppose that all the regular ways of dealing with doors, cars and televisions will be automatically obsolete.
